On Feb. 16, 2004 Damon was involved in a VERY serious car accident and a drunk driver hit him. Most of you already know the story so I will skip over all the details. During that time Damon suffered serious head trauma and as a result he has 9 metal plates in his head to help with all the fractures and breaks that his head endured. Well, now we are here more then 7 years later and we are seeing the very first after effects from this accident and all the surgeries and everything. And since it has been so long, we consider ourselves so very blessed! But here we are now and Damon has Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) leaking out of his skull. It began leaking out on April 27, 2011 early in the morning and we all just kind of thought (Dr.s included) that it was allergies or sinus problems. After this persisting on for a week and a half along with headaches, night chills, fever, weight loss and all the other fun stuff he went to see my Uncle who is an Allergist. Uncle Bill prescribed him another antibiotic and then thought, it might be CSF. We asked how to test and you use a Urine Glucose Strip and let the leakage from your nose drip onto it and then if it is positive then it is most likely CSF. So Damon's cousin ran to her Dad's pharmacy and got the test and we tested during church. It was positive. So he talked to my Uncle after church and we rushed off to the ER where he had Dr's waiting and everything for us. What a great perk that was. :) Thanks Uncle Bill!! They tested again and it came back positive for the CSF. We saw the Dr there at the ER and Dame was going to be admitted and have procedures performed right away but... then we realized that the Doctor that we really wanted didn't know how to perform the procedure so we are going to Houston on Wednesday to meet the Doctor that will. He will be at UT in Downtown Houston and we aren't sure when or for how long. We don't know exactly when the surgery will be but we will keep you all posted. The surgery that will happen is where they will go up through the left nasal cavity and put a blockage where the leak is there at the bottom of the base of the skull. Then after a few weeks of the blockage being there they will go in again and remove it. And see if it holds. If it doesn't hold then that is where it gets scary! Damon would have to have another craniotomy performed. We are praying that the first procedure will work and hold so that we are able to avoid the craniotomy. If you are wondering how we are handling this, we are joking a lot about him leaking his "Brain Juice" everywhere. Also that he won't be as smart as when all this started because he is loosing all of his "Smart Juice". Sorry, we have to joke about it because we are both terrified inside! We are on auto-pilot here and just functioning since we haven't had sleep in days. This is bringing back all those wonderful memories of the car accident 7 years ago. We are just asking for everyone to pray for him and that all goes well with the procedures. Thanks
